“How to Improve Sales - With Niche Knowledge”

- by Roy Primm

Definition of a Niche: An unmet, under-served, ignored, overlooked, or neglected need of people. A specialty, strength, or talent used to serve others.

You can improve your sales immediately by simply using the principle of addition to create a niche.

The words more, extra, enriched, thicker, richer, stronger and other like words are small examples of the principle of addition. Most successful products and services use the principle of addition to create special niches. It’s also the most widely used and easiest to apply.

You can walk down the isle of your local supermarket and see the principle of addition in action. It’s reflected on the packages, boxes, bags, and bottles of cereals, drinks, soaps, and other products. Can you add anything to your product or service? Of course you can.

Think about it, just a simple addition to your product or service can quickly separate you from the herd. A simple addition can help you attract more customers and keep your competitors from stealing your old ones. Would you like that?

The principle of addition can be as simple as adding a small service (that costs little or nothing) or as major an investment as retooling an entire factory. In between these two extremes is the niche you can fill with your product or service.

You would have to look hard to find anything that can’t be added to, increased, made thicker, stronger, or more powerful. By doing one of these your sales will improve and maybe even skyrocket.

Your assignment (should you choose to accept it) is to find ways YOU can apply the principle of addition to YOUR specific business, product, or service.

Remember, people respond to products and services with added benefits and extra features. In fact, many businesses have used this principle alone to create a whole new industry or product line.

Could you imagine buying a breakfast cereal that wasn’t fortified with something? Could you imagine going through a whole year without a car company bragging about having a more powerful engine? Or how about a computer game having more powerful graphics?

Virtually every product or service is trying to add something to keep up with the more demanding consumer. If you don’t, you’ll be left behind.

The secret is to find something extra that your competitors don’t have. If you do this you could attract a whole new market of customers. Or at the very least solidify the loyalty of your established customers.

A key question to ask yourself is "Would my customers like my product or service more if I added ___________?" (Brainstorm possible ideas to fill in the blank.)

Just taking the time to ask the above question will work wonders for your business, product, or service. It will help to give you another powerful niche.

People are always pleased with more of what benefits them. Don’t you? What you need to find out as an entrepreneur or manager is what do your customers want more of. Ask them. Then do it.

Notice the companies that have stood the test of time. You’ll find the principle of addition being used. New products are being added to their lines, new features, new ingredients, new benefits, new services, and even new locations.

The principle of addition gives a business, product, or service a sense of growth. It’s harder for a customer to get tired or bored with a business, product, or service that appears to always be growing in benefits. As a customer you tend to think, "What will they come up with next?"

Using the principle of addition is vital to getting repeat customers, referrals, and new customers. It also helps you avoid the curse of rut thinking. What’s the danger of rut thinking? It makes you more vulnerable to competition. It’s risky not to be open to new ideas, especially if you’re in a highly competitive market.

So consider using the principle of addition to add punch to YOUR sales.
